Channel 4 - Skins Lead British Charge For Prestigious Rose Dor Awards

E4's Skins has helped the UK to lead the way at the esteemed Rose d'Or awards in Switzerland.

The teen drama took the best drama prize while Channel 4 sitcom The IT Crowd was named the best sitcom of the last 12 months.

BBC2's The Peter Serafinowicz Show took the best comedy award while ballet documentary Strictly Bolshoi, from Channel 4, took the best arts programming prize.

BBC satirical series Kombat Opera Presents… was another British winner, grabbing the 'best of 2008' award while The Street received a special mention in the drama category.

"This year's programmes were of exceptional quality, which presented our international jurors with a challenging task," festival director Urban Frye said.

"However, the calibre of entries proves not only that the Rose d'Or is back at the heart of European creativity, but also that it is possible to create programmes with cross-cultural and cross-generational appeal."

Other winners included Dutch hidden-camera show Hider in the House and Swiss arts special Mozart's Magic Flute Onstage and Backstage.

The prestigious honours, now in their 48th year, are bestowed on the best television programmes in eight different categories, namely sitcom, ccomedy, drama, reality show, variety, music, arts and specials, and game show.

Prior to 2004, when the awards moved from Montreux to Lucerne, only one programme per year had been awarded the Rose d'Or with the runners-up taking Silver or Bronze Roses.
